Infrastructure of the Future: Mexico has the opportunity to accelerate sustainable projects with technology

  • A global McKinsey report highlights urgent infrastructure challenges and solutions.
  • Trimble brings key technologies to accelerate change in the Mexican context.

Mexico City, July 2025.-  Global infrastructure is at a critical crossroads: move toward sustainability or fall behind in the face of growing social, environmental, and technological demands.

Although the federal government's physical investment reached 2.8% of GDP in 2023, according to official figures from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), the speed of execution is not always accompanied by efficiency or sustainability. The construction sector accounts for up to 50% of polluting emissions in Mexico , according to the National Housing Commission (CONAVI), while the loss of ecosystems due to urban development continues to increase.

Likewise, the McKinsey & Company report , presented at the 9th Global Infrastructure Initiative Summit, revealed that the construction sector generates nearly 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is responsible for approximately 30% of biodiversity loss.

In this context, the digitalization of the infrastructure sector is not only a global trend, but an urgent necessity.

“In Mexico, where infrastructure investment represents a key lever for economic growth, these challenges are also opportunities. The need for sustainable, efficient, and resilient projects can catalyze a new model of public-private collaboration, in which technology plays a strategic role,” said Eduardo Orozco , Trimble 's Regional Business Director for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Technology for a viable, resilient and measurable infrastructure

Orozco argued that Trimble, a global company with a presence in Mexico, directly contributes to this change with tools that address three key areas:

1. Time and costs under control

With tools like Trimble Construction Cloud and ProjectSight , authorities and private developers can coordinate in real time from design to operation. These platforms reduce construction errors, shorten schedules, and facilitate process auditing, improving transparency.

2. Less emissions, more precision

Using software like Tekla Structures , it's possible to model structures in detail with optimized material usage. Combined with sensors connected to solutions like Trimble 4D Control, this enables continuous structural monitoring, useful for projects such as bridges, railways, and dams.

3. Intelligent lifecycle management

The recent addition of AgileAssets to Trimble's portfolio enables municipalities and state governments to manage roads, water networks, and street furniture from a long-term perspective, with predictive maintenance and budget savings.

“The infrastructure of the future is not just bigger, but smarter,” Eduardo Orozco emphasizes. “The question is no longer whether the way we build should be transformed, but rather how and with what tools we do so responsibly.”
