Made to Last

From the outset of our business in 2015 our goal at Made to Last has been to help people find high quality products that last well.

Behind this is the aim to slow down the speed at which we are consuming the planets resources so that we can live within the limits of the planet. If we buy things that last well then we need to replace less frequently. It also saves us money in the long run.

Currently things are still moving in the wrong direction in terms of the planets resource usage (we are consuming at about 1.7x the rate we should be).

As we have developed the business we have been working closely with our factories to improve the sustainability and longevity of the materials used in our products.

So we were very excited when our mattress factory came to us with a proposal from the SEAQUAL Initiative to use reclaimed ocean plastics in a range of mattresses.

The result is our Portland Green mattresses. These all use SEAQUAL yarn for the ticking (outer material) and they also use up-cycled Polyester in the fillings. In total, a king size Portland Green mattress contains the equivalent of 200 up-cycled marine plastic bottles.

About SEAQUAL

SEAQUAL is an initiative with a mission to keep our oceans free from plastic pollution by up-cycling plastic marine litter into a wide range of high-quality materials.

Jointly with their collaborators SEAQUAL builds the infrastructure necessary to bring value to marine litter. Marine litter from the ocean floor and surface, deposited on our beaches by the tides and entering the ocean via rivers and estuaries is collected by ocean and beach clean-up programs. It is then sorted into different material types for revaluing. The plastic portion is cleaned and transformed into Upcycled Marine Plastic by SEAQUAL approved facilities which is then returned to industry to be transformed into beautiful, new, sustainable products. This Upcycled Marine Plastic has material traceability and certification. In choosing products containing Upcycled Marine Plastic consumers know they are choosing to help end plastic pollution.

SEAQUAL’s first collaboration resulted in the award winning SEAQUAL® YARN, a high quality 100% recycled polyester fiber made in part from plastic marine waste.

Joel Chudleigh, Co-Founder of Made to Last, said the following about the Portland Green Eco-mattresses:

“On a personal level I visit the ocean every week so have witnessed first hand the transformation over the past 20-30 years in terms of plastic waste on our shores. It is incredibly sad to see and also to understand the impact on our ecosystems and the wildlife that live within them.

So I am very excited to be collaborating with the SEAQUAL Initiative in order to help recover ocean plastics and put them to use in a high quality mattress.

With the Portland Green mattresses you can sleep sound knowing that you are doing something positive for the planet."
