On September 10th, the Poulsbo Farmers Market and the Port Orchard Farmers Market held their annual tomato taste-offs. For the second year running, entrants were handicapped by a sub par growing season. Still, there were enough entries to make the events competitive. And there were several surprise winners.

Among slicers, Momotaro won in Poulsbo and Matina in Port Orchard. That Momotaro won wasn’t one of the surprises. The medium-sized, pink tomato is the favorite variety in Japan and has been winning plenty of taste-offs in the Pacific Northwest. It’s our family’s favorite, too.

Matina, the early, smallish, German heirloom variety, was a surprise winner.
